Reflection:
Planning phase:
At
first I thought that doing social engagement task would be a hassle. But as I was
doing the volunteering work, I realised that it can be a transformative experience
for me. At first, we dont know where we'll do our volunteering work. Then after a couple of weeks, we decided to go to two places, which are Al-Firdaus Orphanage and SMK
Presint 8. Firstly, I would like to thanks to our supervisor, Dr Farazila Bt. Yusof
who gave us advice on how to do our program. Next I would like to thanks my
group member who give cooperation to
make our social engagement successfully.
Day of the Event:
From this volunteering program, it teaches me to not
give up in doing something. Before, when I fail in doing something, I will give
up easily. But after seeing the children at the orphanage, even though we gave
a hard task to them despite their age, they still overcome it and succeed at
the end. Same goes as the students at SMK Presint 8, all of them work hard
without a hint of giving up doing the task that we assigned to them.
Other than that, I learn to be more appreciative towards
my parents. When I see the children at the orphanage, I thought to myself of
how hard it is to lose your parents. For them, they lose their parents at a
very young age. Even though they receive a lot of love from their teachers and
the people around them, that love cannot ever replace the love of their
parents. This made me realise on how much I have disobeyed my parents and I want
to change that and give them the love that they deserve.
Next, I learned to be an optimistic person. When we
were doing activities with the students of SMK Presint 8, there are some groups
that cannot do what has been told and some of them in the group has given up,
but there is always someone in the group who encourage the other members and at
the very last minute they succeeded in the task.
What other
thing that I learned at SMK Presint 8 were the willingness to learn new things.
When we teach something new at the students, they feel excited and never
reject when they have to learn new things. When we teach them about the
application of engineering, all of them excited and ready to learn about
engineering.
When I was searching online about the ways of volunteering, there was a
sentence that caught my eye which is ‘Volunteering is not a career, but it is a
curriculum and a culture we must continue to spread.’. For me, I totally agree
with this statement. Although volunteering is helping someone without even
getting a reward, but it gives us something that is much more precious, which
is it teaches us to be a better human being.
For the
past few days of volunteering at both of this places, I felt a sense of satisfaction.
This is because at both of these places they welcome us with open arms and I
have gain a lot of unforgettable memory with them. I hope someday in the future
I will have another opportunity to do volunteer work. I also encourage others
to do volunteer work so that this world will be a better place to live in.
